ServiceNow Developer Architect Job Description
Role Overview
The ServiceNow Developer Architect is a hands-on technical leader responsible for designing, developing, and governing scalable ServiceNow solutions. This role combines deep platform development expertise with architectural decision-making to align ServiceNow capabilities with enterprise business needs.
Key Responsibilities
Architecture & Design
- Design end-to-end ServiceNow platform architecture across ITSM, ITOM, CSM, HRSD, SecOps, and custom applications
- Define technical standards, best practices, and design patterns
- Translate business requirements into scalable ServiceNow solutions
- Review and approve technical designs and custom implementations
- Ensure platform performance, availability, and scalability
Development & Configuration
- Lead hands-on development using:
- Business Rules, Client Scripts, Script Includes
- UI Policies, UI Actions, ACLs
- Flow Designer and Workflow
- Develop and manage custom applications using ServiceNow App Engine
- Implement integrations using REST, SOAP, MID Server, IntegrationHub
- Optimize scripts and configurations for performance and maintainability
- Implement security controls including RBAC and data protection
Platform Governance & Optimization
- Ensure adherence to ServiceNow out-of-the-box (OOTB) principles
- Identify and reduce technical debt
- Manage upgrade readiness and platform releases
- Perform code reviews and enforce quality standards
- Guide teams on platform enhancements and roadmap planning
Leadership & Collaboration
- Act as technical mentor for ServiceNow developers
- Collaborate with business stakeholders, architects, and process owners
- Lead design workshops, PoCs, and solution walkthroughs
- Support DevOps and CI/CD processes for ServiceNow deployments
Required Skills & Qualifications
Technical Skills
- Strong hands-on expertise in ServiceNow scripting (JavaScript-based)
- In-depth knowledge of ServiceNow architecture and data model
- Experience across one or more of:
- ITSM, ITOM, HRSD, CSM, SecOps, GRC
- Integration experience (REST, SOAP, LDAP, SSO)
- Experience with Flow Designer, IntegrationHub, and App Engine
- ServiceNow performance tuning and best practices
Platform & Tools
- ServiceNow Studio
- Update Sets & Source Control
- MID Server configurations
- Service Portal / UI Builder (preferred)
Good to Have
- Experience with ServiceNow IRM, Discovery, CMDB Health
- Knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)
- Experience with Agile / SAFe delivery models
- Exposure to ServiceNow CI/CD tools
- UI Builder & Next Experience Framework
Certifications (Preferred)
- ServiceNow Certified System Administrator (CSA)
- ServiceNow Certified Application Developer (CAD)
- ServiceNow Certified Implementation Specialist
- ServiceNow Certified Technical Architect (CTA if applicable)
Experience
- 812 years of overall IT experience
- 47+ years of hands-on ServiceNow development
- Prior experience in an Architect, Lead Developer, or Platform Owner role
Soft Skills
