Job Description
SYSTEM ADMIN : Core Responsibilities System Configuration & Maintenance
- Manage provisioning and lifecycle of virtual machines and bare-metal servers, including EC2 instances or equivalents across cloud environments. Ensure proper OS-level configuration, naming conventions, and baseline hardening for new systems.
- Conduct routine and emergency operating system patching, coordinating with change windows, documenting updates, and validating system stability post-patch.
- Maintain and control user account provisioning, deactivation, and permission assignments, ensuring adherence to the principle of least privilege and tracking use of elevated (sudo/root) access.
- Apply and audit OS-level configurations such as kernel tuning, firewall rules, DNS resolution settings, and package dependencies.
Monitoring & System Health Management
- Continuously monitor disk usage, CPU, memory, running processes, and service uptime using system monitoring agents or native tools (e.g., top, df, uptime, journalctl).
- Investigate and resolve performance anomalies or service degradation issues, escalating to platform or application teams as necessary.
- Schedule and verify full and incremental OS-level backups, ensuring backup logs, timestamps, and recovery procedures are documented and tested.
Reliability & Recovery Support
- Plan and execute failover and recovery tests for system-level infrastructure layers (e.g., clustered services, replicated file systems), in collaboration with L3 teams.
- Maintain runbooks for system restoration, service reboots, and rollback procedures to ensure quick recovery during unplanned events.
- Support maintenance windows and production cutovers, providing OS-level readiness checks, validation steps, and post-event logs.
DeliverablesPatch & Change Documentation
- Patch logs and change control records, including update versions, change tickets, approval references, and post-patch verification results.
System Health & Performance Reports
- System health summaries highlighting disk usage trends, high-load instances, service restarts, and anomaly flags from monitoring dashboards.
Access & Audit Logs
- User access and session logs, with focus on privileged account usage and login anomalies.
- Sudo command audit reports, capturing all administrative actions executed under elevated privileges with timestamps and user mappings.
