Preoperative Preparation:
1. Verify patient identity, surgical site and consent forms.
2. Prepare the operating room, ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are available and sterile.
3. Assist in positioning the patient for surgery and preparing the surgical site.
Intraoperative Care:
1. Maintain a sterile field during the surgical procedure.
2. H and instruments and supplies to the surgeon and surgical team as needed.
3. Monitor patient vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen saturation.
4. Administer medications and anesthesia as directed by the anesthesiologist or surgeon.
Emergency Response:
1. Be prepared to manage surgical emergencies and complications, assisting with life-saving procedures if necessary.
2. Provide support to the surgical team in critical situations.
Documentation:
1. Maintain detailed and accurate records of the surgical procedure, including counts of instruments and sponges.
2. Document patient assessments, medications administered and communication with the surgical team.
Postoperative Care:
1. Transfer the patient to the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) or the recovery area.
2. Monitor the patient's condition during the immediate postoperative period.
3. Provide postoperative care and assess for any complications.
Patient and Family Education:
1. Explain postoperative instructions to the patient and their family.
2. Offer emotional support and address concerns following surgery.
Infection Control:
1. Follow strict infection control protocols to ensure a sterile and safe surgical environment.
2. Maintain a clean and sterile operating room throughout the procedure.
Resource Management:
1. Manage equipment, supplies and medications to ensure they are readily available and properly maintained.
2. Operate and troubleshoot specialized operating room equipment.
Required Skill Sets:
1. Strong knowledge of surgical procedures, aseptic technique and sterile field maintenance.
2. Strong clinical and critical thinking skills.
3. Effective communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists and other surgical team members.
4. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems.
