Surgeon Advisor Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy Video Annotation
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Surgeon Advisor with handson expertise in laparoscopic cholecystectomy to oversee and support a surgical video annotation initiative. This role will ensure clinical accuracy, consistency, and quality of annotated surgical videos used for AI training and analytics.
The Surgeon Advisor will not provide patient care and will not perform clinical decisionmaking. Instead, they will act as a clinical subjectmatter expert (SME), guiding annotation standards and validating anatomical, instrumental, and procedural labeling.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Oversight & Quality Assurance
- Review annotated laparoscopic cholecystectomy videos for clinical accuracy
- Validate:
- Surgical phases and steps
- Instrument usage
- Anatomical structure identification
- Provide expert feedback on annotation errors, ambiguities, and edge cases
- Approve or contribute to goldstandard (golden set) annotations
Annotation Schema & Guideline Development
- Assist in defining and refining:
- Surgical step taxonomy
- Instrument and anatomy label definitions
- Start/stop criteria for procedural steps
- Collaborate with data annotation and AI teams to ensure labels are clinically meaningful and consistent
Annotator Training & Enablement
- Support training sessions for surgical technologists and annotation teams
- Clarify clinical terminology, procedural flow, and variations in practice
- Serve as an escalation point for complex or unclear annotation cases
Ongoing Project Support
- Participate in periodic reviews of annotation quality metrics
- Advise on clinical nuances that may impact AI model training
- Contribute to recommendations for scaleup or extension of the annotation scope
Required Qualifications
- Licensed General Surgeon (active or formerly active)
- Demonstrated handson experience performing laparoscopic cholecystectomy
- Strong understanding of:
- Laparoscopic surgical anatomy
- Standard and variant surgical techniques
- Common instruments used in laparoscopic cholecystectomy
- Ability to explain surgical concepts clearly to nonclinical teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with:
- Surgical education or training
- Clinical review or quality assurance roles
- Medical data, AI, or informatics initiatives
- Prior involvement in:
- Surgical video review
- Clinical guideline development
- Research or retrospective analysis
