Job Description
Position Summary
The Director of Coding Operations is responsible for the strategic oversight, operational performance, and quality outcomes of a large, multi-client medical coding function. This role leads 50+ coders across multiple specialities, manages client relationships, ensures regulatory and payer compliance, and drives productivity, quality, and automation initiatives across both onshore and offshore teams.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader and strategic thinker with deep multispecialty coding expertise, strong client communication skills, and a proven ability to scale operations while maintaining accuracy and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Lead and manage large, distributed coding teams across multiple clients and specialities
- Oversee daily coding operations to ensure SLA adherence, turnaround times, and productivity targets are consistently met
- Develop staffing models, capacity planning, and workload balancing across clients and specialities
- Partner with HR and training teams to support hiring, on boarding, and cross-training initiatives
Client & Stakeholder Management
- Serve as the primary coding operations leader for assigned clients, maintaining strong, trusted relationships
- Participate in client calls, leadership meetings, and escalation management related to coding performance, quality, and compliance
- Translate client requirements into actionable workflows, metrics, and team expectations
- Proactively identify risks and opportunities impacting client satisfaction and revenue integrity
Quality, Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure adherence to CMS, CPT, ICD-10-CM/PCS, payer-specific, and speciality-specific guidelines
- Collaborate with QA, compliance, and billing teams to address denials, trends, and documentation gaps
- Lead provider and internal education initiatives based on audit findings and regulatory changes
Performance Management & Analytics
- Establish and monitor KPIs, including productivity, accuracy, backlog, rework, and denial trends
- Leverage dashboards and reporting tools to drive transparency and data-driven decisions
- Conduct performance reviews, coaching, and development planning for managers, leads, and senior coders
- Foster a culture of accountability, ownership, and continuous improvement
Process Improvement & Automation
- Identify opportunities to improve workflows through standardisation, automation, and AI-enabled tools
- Partner with IT, analytics, and product teams on coding tools, encoder optimisation, and AI initiatives
- Drive change management and adoption of new technologies and processes
People Leadership & Culture
- Develop and mentor coding managers, team leads, and high-potential coders
- Promote engagement, collaboration, and professional growth across teams
- Champion a culture of quality, compliance, accountability, and client-first service
Required Qualifications
- 812+ years of progressive medical coding experience, including leadership of large teams
- Proven experience managing multispecialty coding (e.g., E/M, surgery, OB/GYN, anaesthesia, ED, radiology, infusions, etc.)
- Demonstrated success leading coders in a high-volume, multi-client environment
- Strong knowledge of CMS rules, payer policies, and compliance standards
- Experience working with onshore and offshore coding teams preferred
- Advanced understanding of coding quality assurance and audit methodologies
Certifications (Required or Preferred)
- CPC, CCS or equivalent (required)
- Multiple certifications or speciality credentials strongly preferred
