The Logging Platform team in Observability at Walmart is dedicated to building robust, scalable, and intelligent solutions for managing and analyzing Walmart s extensive log data. Our team partners with engineers, data scientists, and business stakeholders to develop advanced systems for log analysis, anomaly detection, and predictive monitoring

What Youll Do:
As a Principal Engineer on Walmart s Logging Platform team, you will drive the architectural strategy for intelligent log analysis, anomaly detection, and predictive monitoring, directly influencing Walmart s operational excellence and digital transformation.
We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead our Observability initiatives within the Logging Platform team. In this strategic role, you will architect and enhance observability solutions that deliver deep, actionable insights into application and infrastructure performance at Walmart scale. You will be responsible for conceptualizing and implementing robust monitoring, logging, and tracing systems that empower engineering teams to proactively monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize complex distributed environments.
- Lead the design and architecture of high-performance, cloud-native backend services and APIs (Java, Golang, or Rust) in a microservices environment, ensuring scalability, reliability, and security at enterprise scale.
- Set technical direction and best practices for end-to-end service ownership, including architecture, implementation, testing, deployment, and operational excellence (SLOs, reliability, scalability).
- Champion observability and performance engineering by advancing instrumentation and monitoring using OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, and Grafana, driving incident reduction and system resilience.
- Collaborate with engineering, data science, and business leaders to align technical solutions with organizational goals, and communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- Mentor and guide senior engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and continuous learning.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and industry trends, shaping Walmart s infrastructure and platform strategy.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives, influencing technical direction across multiple teams and domains.
What Youll Bring:
- Bachelor s or Master s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 10+ years of industry experience in software engineering, with a focus on large-scale, distributed systems and platform architecture.
- Proven expertise in designing and building high-performance backend services and APIs using Java, Golang, or Rust in cloud-native, microservices environments.
- Demonstrated experience in end-to-end service ownership, including architecture, implementation, testing, deployment, and operational excellence.
- Deep knowledge of observability tools (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana) and best practices for system monitoring and performance tuning.
- Exceptional problem-solving, decision-making, and analytical skills, with a track record of diagnosing complex issues and driving effective solutions.
- Outstanding communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence and align stakeholders across engineering, data science, and business teams.
- Recognized technical leader with a passion for mentoring, fostering innovation, and driving results in a fast-paced environment.
- Strategic thinker with a proactive, ownership-driven approach to technical challenges and project delivery.
