Job Description

JD - Palliative Care Nurse:

Project Context:

This role of Palliative Care Nurse is part of Defeat-NCD India Foundations Palliative Care Programme. A 3-year initiative with Goa Medical College (GMC) started in 2025 is foreseen to establish OPD, IPD, day-care, and home-based palliative care services.

Key objectives include:

  • Improving quality of life for patients with life-threatening illnesses.
  • Reducing hospital readmissions through community-based care.
  • Strengthening training for healthcare professionals and caregivers.

Role Details

Position Title :Palliative Care Nurse

Work Location: Goa

Total Positions: 1

Reporting Manager: Palliative care Medical Officer / Specialised Nurse and in close coordination with GMC Head of Oncology Department

Contract: One-year consultancy contract, renewable annually based on performance, within the three-year project duration

Renumeration (CTC basis): Between INR 25,000 to 35,000 per month (will be determined based on qualifications and experience)

Stakeholders

Relationship (within the organisation): Multi-disciplinary team members in the program (DNCD India and GMC)

Relationship (Outside Organisation): Primary Care professionals

Hospital colleagues, Community-based organizations

Brief Job Description

  • Provide critical nursing support and education to palliative care patients and their caregivers across settings OPD, IPD and Home care
  • Perform comprehensive nursing assessment of patients with advanced or life-limiting conditions.
  • Monitor and manage symptoms including pain, breathlessness, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, delirium, and terminal symptoms.
  • Administer medications as prescribed, including opioids and adjuvant therapies, ensuring safe handling and documentation.
  • Assist in procedures related to palliative care (example wound care, catheterization, Ryles tube feeding, stoma care).
  • Monitor vital signs and document patient progress systematically.
  • Identify and escalate clinical deterioration to the physician promptly.
  • Identify the psycho-social needs and help triage to multi-Disciplinary team member
  • Maintenance of nursing record, patient registers OPD, IPD, and home care, death register
  • Participate actively in continuing education training programs
  • Participate in home visits as part of palliative care outreach team.
  • Coordinate with ANM, community health workers for follow-up care.
  • Maintain home visit documentation and reporting.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • BSc, GNM (General Nurse Midwifery)

Desirable:

  • Computer Skills- MS Office (Word, PowerPoint and Excel)

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of clinical experience in Palliative care

Skills/Competencies:

  • Exemplify ethical behaviour.
  • adhere to the practice of respect, confidentiality, beneficence and non-maleficence regarding patients, families, staff, and the organization.
  • Exemplify respectful behaviour with all members of the team and foster the dignity of each member in their role.
  • Educate patients /family on clinical condition, hands-on care needs, progress of disease, prognosis
  • Discuss and provide end-of-life care with empathy and religious/cultural sensitivity
  • Be available out-of-hours for phone follow-up/triage
  • Update knowledge and skills of the science continuously
