Job Description

Role & responsibilities


Blood Grouping and Serology Lab: -

  1. Blood Grouping (ABO and Rh)
  2. Weak D testing in case of Rh D negative blood groups.
  3. Detection of unexpected antibodies
  4. Cross matching
  5. Preparing 5% Pooled Cell for Serum Group and Antibody screening
  6. Preparing IgG sensitized cell suspension
  7. Prepare Normal Saline every month or as and when required. Check the quality as per our SOP and document the details of preparation and quality check in Normal Saline register.
  8. Preparing 6 % Bovine Albumin when performing Direct Antiglobulin test.
  9. Direct Antiglobulin Test (DAT) / Direct Coombs Test (DCT)
  10. Indirect Antiglobulin Test (IAT) / Indirect Coombs Test (ICT)
  11. Pretransfusion testing of infant less than 4 months of age
  12. Antibody Titer
  13. Investigation of blood component received back due to complaint of transfusion reaction.
  14. Discard of unusable blood & components appropriately
  15. Blood component's issue
  16. Discard blood samples older than 7 days
  17. Check and document appearance of blood grouping Antisera, Bovine albumin, AHG and Normal Saline in any Blood Grouping Register
  18. Raising entry in computer of blood components issued to the patients.

Transfusion Transmissible Infection (TTI) Lab.: -

1. HIV - 1 & 2 testing by Chemillumination /Rapid method as per SOP.

2. HBsAg testing by Chemillumination /Rapid method as per SOP

3. HCV testing by Chemillumination /Rapid method as per SOP

4. Syphilis testing by RPR/Card as per SOP

5. Malaria testing by card / Strip method as per SOP.

  1. Preparation and storage of different kind of blood components like Red Cell Concentrate (RCC), Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP), Platelet Concentrate (PC), Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), Cryo Poor Plasma (CPP) and Cryoprecipitate.
  2. Preparation and storage of specialized components like Leuco-Reduced (Buffy coat removed) Red Cell Concentrate. Leuco-Reduced (Saline washed) Red Cell Concentrate and Leuco-depleted (Filtered) Red Cell Concentrate.
  3. Preparation of Pediatric Units from RCC, Plasma and Platelets etc.
  4. Shift untested blood components to appropriate place after testing (by the technician doing TTI testing)
  5. Labeling of blood components at different stages of preparation, storage and issue.

Apheresis Room

  1. All Apheresis procedures (collection as well as therapeutic) including Registration of Donor, Donor Screening, Kit Installation, Phlebotomy, Donor Care during and after donation,
  2. Storage and Issue/discard of collected apheresis product

Inventory management for consumables: -

  1. Give Departmental indent to store for getting consumables.
  2. Keep Stock registers up to date whenever use the consumables
  3. Giving Purchase Requisition

Quality Management System, Quality Assurance & Quality Control (QC) Lab.: -

  1. Maintain Quality Management System as per departmental policies, processes and procedures
  2. Do Quality Assurance procedures as per departmental policies, processes and procedures
  3. Quality control (QC) of reagents and blood components as per departmental policies, processes and procedures

Instruments operation and Maintenance: -

  1. Equipment management as per QSP/SOP
  2. Maintain Temperature Sheet on blood storage cabinets
  3. Changing charts of temperature recorders of all instruments
  4. To check the performance of all the instruments as per the SOP and in case of any breakdown, informing to biomedical department and Department of Transfusion Medicine consultant.

Blood Donation Department:

  1. Donor Registration
  2. Donor Screening
  3. Medical screening and its documentation
  4. To collect blood from accepted donors
  5. Care of donor during and after blood donation.
  6. Making arrangement to give refreshment and sufficient rest to the donor after donation.
  7. Making arrangement to put band-aid on the punctured site after the bleeding stops.
  8. Immediate management of adverse reaction and making arrangement to inform doctor simultaneously. Recording of event of adverse reaction as per the SOP.
  9. Donor Rejection record as per the SOP.
