Role Overview
JAVA Engineering Planning Lead will own requirement breakdown, effort estimation, sprint planning, and capacity tracking to ensure realistic timelines and predictable delivery. This role acts as a neutral bridge between Product, Engineering, and Leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Requirement Breakdown & Planning: Breaking requirements into development, testing, deployment tasks; identifying dependencies, risks, and hidden efforts; converting work into executable and trackable items.
Effort Estimation & Forecasting: Estimating effort for new features, enhancements, bug fixes, integrations, and technical debt; applying buffers and mitigation planning; validating estimates using historical data.
Sprint & Capacity Planning: Sprint planning, release planning, capacity assessment, team allocation, workload balancing, and delivery timeline alignment.
Stakeholder Management: Acting as a bridge between Product and Engineering; explaining estimates, assumptions, risks, and timelines; participating in review and planning meetings.
Process & Governance: Creating lightweight SOPs for estimation, planning, and capacity tracking; maintaining templates, reports, dashboards; tracking estimation accuracy vs actuals.
Requirements
Core Experience: 7-12 years in software delivery or planning roles with mandatory hands-on background as a Java Developer and strong understanding of Java architecture.
Technical Understanding: Knowledge of SDLC, backend and frontend concepts, APIs, integrations, databases, SaaS architecture, and deployment cycles.
Planning & Estimation Skills: Time-based estimation, sprint and capacity planning, dependency analysis, risk identification, mitigation planning.
Tools & Reporting: Hands-on experience with Jira, ClickUp, Linear or similar tools; task tracking, sprint planning, capacity reporting, dashboards, and documentation.
Communication & Mindset: Strong stakeholder communication, data-driven decision-making, ability to challenge unrealistic timelines, high ownership and accountability.
Bug Triage & Prioritization Support: Classifying bugs by severity, impact, and effort; working with Product and Support teams to provide realistic fix timelines and identify quick wins versus complex fixes.
Role Boundaries:This role focuses on delivery estimation and timelines (how long it will take) and does not include direct developer management, ownership of product prioritisation, or acting as a Scrum Master or delivery coordinator.
Nice to Have
Experience in SaaS + services environments; exposure to ERP, CRM, or third-party integrations; experience in fast-growing or founder-led organisations.
Career Growth
Short term: Own estimation and delivery planning across products. Medium term: Build and lead a Delivery Planning / Estimation team. Long term: Grow into Product Operations or Product leadership roles.
