Job Description
Role Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Azure Machine Learning Specialist to lead the design and deployment of advanced predictive models for a leading UK university. The role focuses on developing high-accuracy student number forecasting systems using Azure ML, Python, and Databricks, integrating multiple data sources into automated, scalable pipelines. Candidate will collaborate with the Data & Analytics and Planning teams to build, train, and validate models in line with the universitys data governance and security standards.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Data Analysis and Model Development
- Conduct detailed audits of CRM, application, and enrolment datasets in Azure to assess data quality, completeness, and modelling suitability
- Design, develop, and implement machine learning models to forecast student numbers across multiple intakes, covering variations by course, mode, location, and student type
- Apply advanced statistical and machine learning methods (ARIMA, Prophet, Gradient Boosting, Random Forest, LSTM) to maximise forecast accuracy, interpretability, and reliability
- Validate, test, and refine models using recognised performance metrics such as RMSE, MAPE, and R-squared to achieve the required accuracy levels
2. Integration and Automation
- Integrate forecasting models into existing Azure-based data pipelines, leveraging Data Factory, Synapse, and Data Lake services
- Automate model training and deployment cycles following MLOps and CI/CD best practices (using MLflow, DVC, GitHub Actions, and Azure DevOps)
- Embed model outputs within Power BI dashboards and other visualization tools for business and academic users
- Develop scalable, maintainable solutions to ensure forecasts can be easily retrained and updated
3. Knowledge Transfer and Documentation
- Collaborate with university stakeholders through virtual workshops, progress meetings, and hands-on knowledge transfer sessions
- Produce comprehensive technical documentation detailing data structures, model logic, retraining procedures, and maintenance guidelines
- Deliver training sessions for internal staff to ensure continued in-house management of the models post-deployment
4. Communication and Collaboration
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to non-specialist audiences in fluent English
- Collaborate across international time zones using Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, or equivalent collaboration platforms
- Provide progress updates, insights, and reports on model performance and improvement opportunities
Technical Skills:
- Advanced programming proficiency in Python (Pandas, Scikit-learn, PyTorch/TensorFlow) or R
- Expertise in time-series forecasting using Prophet, ARIMA, and LSTM frameworks
- Strong knowledge of data preprocessing, feature engineering, model validation, and MLOps within Azure environments
- Familiarity with Microsoft Dynamics CRM data models and integration workflows
- Understanding of data visualization and interpretation best practices
- Awareness of GDPR and ethical AI principles in educational data contexts
