Role & responsibilities
Responsible for the functioning of the NICU
- Adherence to Nursing clinical standards.
Responsible for the NICU routine, equipment and patients.
- Take over and handover efficiently at change of shifts.
- Manpower deployment as per Patient Nurse ratio based on neonate condition; escalates in
case of shortage.
- Ensures compliance to grooming standard, discipline and decorum of team.
- Capable of quick accurate decision making in emergencies.
- Ensures the Nursing Assessment Guide is completed within 15-30 minutes of admission.
- Ensures the patient is comfortable and implements safety measures for vulnerable patients
as per the policy.
- Adheres to all safety measures involved in patient care and self-protection.
- Competently handles all equipment and gadgets used in patient care in NICU.
- Understands and ensures patient rights are adhered to.
- Reviews the doctors notes and the drug chart on admission and acts as required.
- Prepares nursing care plans and renders effective bedside nursing care.
- Ensure all investigations are carried out as advised by the doctor; reports available on time
for doctors perusal and further advice.
- Assist the doctors in procedures, dressings and rounds.
- Mandatorily present for the daily Neonatologist counseling of parents.
- Ensure all equipment is always serviceable.
- Aware of and adheres to narcotic policy.
- Infection control: monitors and ensures personnel, patients and environmental hygiene.
- Ensures parents adhere to infection control - hand washing, change of attire before entry.
- Maintains medical and nursing records of patients as per protocol.
- Handles waste segregation and disposal as per the policy.
- Inventory management for drugs and consumables; ensures no wastage.
- Implements the visitor policy; ensure visitors are briefed regarding personal items safety,
infection control requirements.
- Monitors pharmacy indents, checks on receipt, stocks the patients bedside locker and
medication trolley.
- Ensures medication safety and timely therapies based on care plan.
- To monitor administration of drugs according to Drug Administration Policy.

w Administering of dangerous medicines is counter checked by a second nurse for the ten
medication rights and complete documentation as per policy is ensured.
w Observes the patient to ensure safe medication and note any adverse reactions.
w Any errors in medication or nursing intervention to be brought immediately to the
notice of the Nursing Superintendent.
- Manage patient transfers and discharges as per protocol.
- To coordinate neonate transportation complete management of neonate retrieval from outside location equipment, manpower, transport kit.
- Aware of and practices the following measures: Barrier Nursing, neonatal death protocol.
- Aware of NABH & Nursing Excellence standards and ensure implementation.
- Ensures accurate data collection for Nursing Quality Indicators.
- Maintain records of all procedures, births, still births, incidents, monthly census.
- Report the day-to-day activities, especially issues needing resolution.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient information: medical and personal; avoids any violation by ensuring no discussion of patient identifiable information in non-secure areas.
- Coordinates and works closely with LDR, OT & Ward.
- Co-ordinates with Billing team regarding admissions, discharges and billing activities.

- Thorough knowledge on gestational age assessment, and the special problems of the premature, post-mature, small for gestational age, large for gestational age neonates. Medication dosage (i.e. according to weight and body surface)
- To follow universal precautions as per the unit protocol.
- To assist the doctors in the management of the asphyxiated neonates, including resuscitation and stabilization.
- To be fully aware of the APGAR scoring performed.
- To ensure safety and security of neonates by practicing safety measures.
- To assist the doctors in the following procedures with properly set procedure trolleys.
w Veno-puncture w Lumbar puncture
w Endotracheal intubation w Catheterization of umbilical artery and vein.
w Peripheral I.V. and arterial line insertion w ICD insertion
- To encourage, educate and assist mothers in breastfeeding.
- To reassure and provide education to the attendant on breastfeeding, additional feeding, safety measures, and effect of medication.
- To prepare additional feed with strict aseptic technique as per the doctors written instruction.
- To have thorough knowledge on I.V. fluid and drug calculation.
- Responsible for checking and recording daily weight of the neonate.
- Responsible for monitoring and maintaining normal oxygen saturation level. Monitoring the oxygenation level of the neonate.
- Manage neonatal emergency.
