Job Title: Performance Test Engineer
Job Description:
As a Performance Test Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining automated performance tests for web applications, cloud-native, and microservices-based systems. You will work closely with developers, product owners, and other stakeholders to ensure scalability, reliability, and optimal performance of applications under varying load conditions. Your role will also focus on performance tuning, optimization, and debugging to ensure high-performing applications across cloud environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain automated performance test scripts for web applications, cloud-native systems, and microservices using tools like Rational Performance Tester / HCL OneTest Performance, JMeter, Gatling, and LoadRunner.
- Execute and manage performance tests to assess system scalability, stress, and endurance under varied load conditions.
- Collaborate with development, operations, and product teams to understand application behavior and ensure performance requirements are addressed during development and deployment.
- Identify and troubleshoot performance bottlenecks across applications and infrastructure, using critical analytical skills to perform in-depth root-cause analysis.
- Implement performance tuning and optimization strategies for both applications and infrastructure, including optimizing response times, throughput, and resource consumption.
- Leverage IBM OpenShift and cloud environments (AWS/GCP/Azure) for testing, ensuring performance is validated in these distributed environments.
- Integrate performance testing into the CI/CD pipeline to enable continuous performance validation and monitoring throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Provide detailed performance reports and analysis, including insights into trends, potential issues, and recommendations for optimization.
- Mentor junior team members on performance testing best practices, advanced performance tools, and debugging techniques.
- Collaborate with development and operations teams to optimize code, architecture, and infrastructure based on performance test results.
- Troubleshoot and debug performance issues identified during testing, and work with development teams to resolve them, ensuring applications are optimized for real-world traffic scenarios.
- Continuously improve performance testing methodologies, incorporating emerging tools, technologies, and best practices to stay ahead of the performance engineering curve.
- Work with the release management team to ensure performance tests are regularly executed as part of the CI/CD process, with results effectively communicated to stakeholders.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's/Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
- 10+ years of experience of working in a product development team with a strong focus on performance testing and performance engineering.
- Expertise in using Rational Performance Tester / HCL OneTest Performance, JMeter, Gatling, or other leading performance testing tools.
- Strong experience in performance tuning and optimization, including load balancing, database optimization, and application-level performance improvements.
- Deep understanding of cloud-native and microservices-based applications and performance testing in cloud environments like IBM OpenShift, AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify bottlenecks, diagnose performance issues, and implement optimization techniques.
- Expertise in debugging performance issues, conducting root cause analysis, and providing actionable insights to development teams.
- Strong understanding of performance testing types such as load testing, stress testing, scalability testing, and endurance testing.
- Knowledge of integrating performance testing into the CI/CD pipeline, enabling continuous performance validation.
- Experience in performance testing for REST APIs and other microservices interfaces under load.
- Exposure to the design and development of performance testing frameworks, as well as integrating them with development processes.
- Experience with Linux/Unix environments and leveraging these for executing and analyzing performance tests.
- Excellent communication skills to present complex performance issues clearly and work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
- Proven ability to mentor and lead junior team members on performance engineering best practices.
- Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies and the ability to adapt to changing priorities and fast-paced development cycles.
