Job Description

The Casualty / Emergency Nurse In-charge directs and manages nursing and related activities of the Emergency Department, plans assignments of staff, ensures adequate supplies are available, addresses physician concerns within the department, schedules education classes for the ER Team within the hospital.


  • Ensure timely access for patients seeking emergency care as well as allocating resources to optimise patient safety, staff well-being and ED Nursing operations.
  • Responsible for direct administrative and technical supervision of nursing assistance, responsible for maintaining quality of patient care and evaluates nursing activities to ensure patient care, staff relations, and efficiency of service.
  • Provide efficient assistance to physicians and meticulous observation of medical aspects by medical, nursing, and auxiliary personnel.
  • Maintains high clinical standards, facilitate and participate in audits and skill checks.
  • Efficiently manage inventory.
  • Conform to all regulatory guidelines, ensure adherence to the facilitys policies, and maintain compliance with standards of practice and ethics.
  • De-escalate potentially volatile situations involving patients or co-workers.
  • Delegate unit and patient responsibilities to nursing staff based on each staff members level of competence.
  • Educate nursing staff regarding the use of all equipment and supplies, safe patient handling techniques, safety procedures, and infection control.
  • Correspond with physicians to ensure that all information is readily available to patient care providers.
  • Provides patient/family or care giver education and counselling in recognition and solution of physical, emotional, and environmental health problems.
  • Supervises health care members (i.e., licensed practical nurses, nurse aides, EMT's) with patients.
  • Maintains knowledge of documentation requirements needed for patient records.
  • Utilizing the nursing process, plans and directs care of the emergency patient.
  • Maintain quality of in-service training provided to personnel.
  • Advocate and ensure participation in interdepartmental activities, focusing on process improvements and achieving hospital-wide goals.
  • Actively participate as a member by providing excellent customer service, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing operational changes.
  • Promote high standards of performance by always exhibiting compassion and professionalism and by being responsible for actions, attitude, and body language.
  • Keep track of equipment and supplies to make sure department retains the tools needed to provide patient care and to assure departmental resources are used wisely.

Required Candidate Profile


  • Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery / Bachelor of Science - Nursing.
  • Current registration to practice as a Registered Nurse in Karnataka State [should possess valid Karnataka Nursing Council Number]
  • Demonstrated ability to accept accountability and responsibility for own actions within Registered Nurses scope of practice and works within the MH Framework Competency Standards for a Registered Nurse.
  • Evidence of participation in own professional development and commitment to maintaining competence and enhancement of skills.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ensures that the quality of care provided to patients is safe, efficient, effective, accessible, and timely and consumer focused.
  • Excellent clinical assessment and decision-making skills.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in Casualty / Emergency and a minimum of 3 years experience as Nurse Incharge in Casualty/Emergency at NABH recognized Hospital.
  • Knowledge of emergency hospital procedures, critical care unit infection control and hygiene policies.
  • Hands-on experience in caring for surgical patients.
  • Proven ability to multitask and work calmly but efficiently in sensitive environment.

Key Competencies:


- Critical-Thinking Skills: Nurses will need to assess a patient's health, as well as detect changes in symptoms, health or pain, and will need to know when action is necessary.

- Compassion: Nurses help people. You will need to be sympathetic to a patient's needs, and be able to deal with people in various states of pain, trauma and tragedy.

- Attention to Detail: Nurses can help doctors operate, administer medicines and work with specific treatments that, if wrong could prove fatal.

- Attention to detail is crucial.

- Organizational Skills: Nurses will face multiple patients, with differing needs, stages of health and risks. Being organized and knowing how to prioritize will be helpful.

- Focused under Pressure: Nurses might face emergency, life-or-death situations. Being able to function in the heat of emergency will be necessary.

- Patience: Giving care under stressful circumstances requires patience.

- Communication Skills: Nurses might communicate directly with patients who are scared, in pain or in shock. Families will have questions and want answers. Nurses need to be a patient listener and good communicator to help keep everyone calm and help them understand the situation.

- Preference would be given to aspirants willing to work at / relocate to Mysore.

- Hostel Facility would be provided for Female Staff.
