Overview

Medical coders are responsible for assigning standardized codes to medical records and other healthcare documentation. These codes are used by insurance companies to process claims and reimburse healthcare providers for their services. Medical coders must have a strong understanding of medical terminology and coding guidelines in order to accurately assign codes.

Responsibilities

• Review and analyze patient medical records to identify diagnoses, procedures, and other relevant information.
• Assign appropriate codes to medical records using coding manuals and guidelines.
• Review and verify codes for accuracy and completeness.
• Stay up-to-date on coding changes and guidelines.
• Communicate with healthcare providers to clarify information and resolve coding discrepancies.
• Audit medical records and coded data to ensure compliance with coding standards.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Associate's or bachelor's degree in medical coding or a related field is preferred
• Strong understanding of medical terminology and coding guidelines
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
• Strong computer skills
