Job Description
The Database Director - Operations is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing all aspects of database operations within the organization. This position is focused exclusively on operations, ensuring the stability, reliability, and performance of the database systems. The incumbent will lead a team of database administrators and work collaboratively to ensure seamless day-to-day operations, proactive monitoring, and efficient incident resolution. Key Responsibilities Lead the database operations team, providing clear direction, guidance, and mentorship to ensure optimal performance. Define and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for routine database maintenance, backups, and monitoring. Oversee the installation, configuration, and maintenance of database management systems. Monitor database performance, availability, and resource utilization to identify and address issues promptly. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to prioritize and execute database maintenance tasks without disrupting business operations. Ensure data integrity and security by enforcing access controls, authentication mechanisms, and encryption protocols. Manage database backups, recovery, and disaster recovery plans to minimize data loss and downtime. Lead incident response efforts, coordinating with technical teams to resolve critical database incidents efficiently. Plan and execute database migrations, upgrades, and patch management in coordination with software development teams. Establish and maintain documentation for database configurations, processes, and procedures. Develop and manage capacity planning strategies to accommodate data growth and changing business requirements. Collaborate with vendors and technical support teams to resolve database-related issues. Monitor and enforce compliance with relevant data protection regulations and security standards. Provide regular status reports on database operations, incidents, and performance metrics to senior management. Identify opportunities for process improvements and automation to enhance operational efficiency. Stay informed about industry best practices and emerging technologies in database operations. Manage vendor relationships for database-related tools, software, and services. Coordinate with internal stakeholders to ensure alignment between database operations and business needs. Participate in on-call rotations to provide 24/7 support for critical database incidents. Evaluate and implement database monitoring and alerting tools to proactively identify issues. Conduct performance reviews and provide professional development opportunities for the operations team. Foster a culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and knowledge sharing within the database operations team. Assess and recommend improvements to database architecture to support scalability and performance. Lead database-related incident post-mortems to identify root causes and prevent recurrence. Manage database-related budgeting and resource allocation in alignment with organizational goals. Qualifications Typically requires a bachelor's degree (in Computer Science or related field) or equivalent. 5+ years of proven experience in data management operations, including leading high-performance teams 15-20 years of experience with software backend systems, architectures, Database infrastructure, especially cross-platform, cloud native Database systems. Strong knowledge supporting High availability architecture with relevant experience in Distributed Database platforms such as Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MS SQL, DB2 LUW etc. Experience in supporting High availability architecture with relevant experience in Database technologies. Production implementations experience desired. Strong database design and development experience for very large database Must have strong working knowledge of Database components such as HA, DR, Encryption, Centralized Key Management, DB Tuning, Monitoring etc. Experience in automating deployments and monitoring/alerting tasks (preferably Terraform). Support for Databases environments including on call support. Experience in handling Disaster recovery scenarios setting resiliency across all tiers of software architecture. Experience in working cloud infrastructure such as AWS, etc. Experience of managing multiple RDBMS platforms on large systems Experience of working in a team that delivers a high quality, available and stable service. Assist in the review and audit of database security policies, and experience to work closely with the security and auditing teams (internal audit, PWC and PCI payment card industry). Open and coordinate service requests with Vendor Support Experience of application software development life cycle. Should be able to influence application projects and provide guidance if needed. Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment are required Practical experience in monitoring and tuning a database to provide a high availability service. Ability to adapt to multi-lingual and multicultural environment, additional language skills are a bonus. Ability to handle conflicting priorities. Ability to learn, Adaptability, Receptive to change.
