- About the Role We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer with 5+ years of hands-on Ruby on Rails experience to join our fast-growing SaaS startup. In this role, you will own the design, development, and maintenance of our core services, drive performance and scalability improvements, and mentor a small team of engineers. Your deep knowledge of Rails 5/6/7 (including version upgrade experience) will be essential, along with expertise in background processing, SQL optimization, system design, and database modeling. The ideal candidate thrives in startup environments, embraces microservices architecture and modern design patterns, and has leadership experience guiding engineering teams to ship high-quality software. Key Responsibilities Architecture & Development Design, build, and maintain scalable, high-performance Rails services and APIs using Rails 5/6/7 Lead Rails version upgrades (e.g., Rails 5 6, 6 7) Address and resolve deprecations systematically Implement performance optimizations across the application stack Background Processing & Performance Implement and tune background jobs with Sidekiq, Delayed Jobs, or similar frameworks Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks and code smells Ensure robust monitoring and alerting for system health Database & System Design Model complex relational schemas in MySQL Write and optimize advanced SQL queries and database indices Design fault-tolerant, horizontally scalable microservices architectures Security & Best Practices Implement industry-standard security practices throughout the codebase Perform security audits and address vulnerabilities proactively Stay current with security patches and updates for all dependencies Leadership & Code Quality Lead and mentor a small team of backend engineers Conduct thorough code reviews and drive engineering best practices Enforce coding standards and maintain high test coverage (RSpec, Minitest) Automate CI/CD pipelines for efficient deployment processes Cross-Functional Collaboration Work closely with Product and Design teams to clarify requirements and define APIs Partner with DevOps to containerize services (Docker) and deploy on Kubernetes clusters Ensure seamless integrations between systems and services Basic Qualifications Experience: Minimum 5 years as a Backend Engineer in Ruby on Rails environments Rails Versions: Proven work on Rails 5/6/7; experience leading major version upgrades Background Processing: Hands-on experience with Sidekiq, Delayed Jobs, or equivalent systems Caching: Have hands on experience with Redis RSpec Proficiency: Extensive experience writing and maintaining test suites with RSpecincluding unit, integration, and job specsfor behavior-driven development and ensuring high test coverage SQL: Expert in writing and optimizing complex SQL queries (MySQL) System Design: Strong background in service-oriented and microservices architectures Security Knowledge: Understanding of common web vulnerabilities and secure coding practices Startup/SaaS Experience: Prior work in fast-paced product teams in SaaS or startup contexts Leadership: Experience managing or mentoring engineers, conducting reviews, and guiding technical decisions Design Patterns: In-depth understanding of SOLID principles, event-driven architectures, CQRS, and domain-driven design Nice-to-Have (Bonus Points) DevOps Skills: Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, Helm charts, and cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure) AI/ML Integration: Exposure to Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), embeddings, vector databases (e.g., Pinecone, Weaviate), and experience building AI-powered features Interview Rounds: Technical Introductory call with our AI Interviewer (20 minutes) High Level System Design Round (HLD) (1 hour) Low Level System Design Round (LLD) (1 hour) Final Call with Co-Founder (30 minutes),
