The IP Telephony Engineer is responsible for designing, deploying, managing, and troubleshooting the organization's Voice over IP (VoIP) and unified communications infrastructure. This role ensures high availability, quality of service (QoS), and security of voice and video communications systems.
Design, implement, and maintain IP telephony solutions including VoIP systems, call managers, IP phones, gateways, SBCs, and voicemail systems.
Monitor and optimize telephony network performance, including traffic analysis, latency, jitter, and packet loss.
Manage VoIP infrastructure components such as Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM), Avaya, Microsoft Teams Voice, or similar platforms.
Configure and maintain SIP trunks, PRI lines, and other PSTN connectivity.
Support call recording systems, voicemail, conferencing, and IVR solutions.
Work closely with network teams to ensure adequate QoS, VLAN configuration, and traffic shaping.
Troubleshoot call quality issues, dropped calls, and connectivity problems.
Perform regular system backups, firmware upgrades, and security patches.
Create and maintain technical documentation, network diagrams, and call flow charts.
Support user provisioning, moves/adds/changes, and service desk escalations.
Ensure compliance with regulatory and security standards (e.g., E911, GDPR, HIPAA if applicable).
Participate in disaster recovery and business continuity planning for voice systems.
Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
3+ years of experience in IP telephony, VoIP, or Unified Communications environments.
Experience with major platforms such as Cisco (CUCM, Unity, UCCX), Avaya, Mitel, or Microsoft Teams Voice.
Strong understanding of SIP, H.323, RTP, QoS, and network protocols.
Familiarity with SBCs (e.g., AudioCodes, Ribbon), gateways, and firewalls.
Experience with voice monitoring tools (e.g., SolarWinds, Cisco Prime, Wireshark).
VoIP certifications (e.g., Cisco CCNP Collaboration, Avaya ACIS/ACSS) are a plus.
