A FinOps Engineer is a technical role focused on optimizing cloud computing costs by monitoring cloud usage, identifying waste, implementing cost-saving strategies, and collaborating with cross-functional teams like engineering, finance, and operations to ensure efficient cloud spend and align with business goals, often utilizing automation and data analysis to achieve cost optimization across the organization.
As a FinOps Engineer, you contribute to the high performing culture of the Cloud Compute by delivering a user experience that is better, faster, and cheaper through cloud.
You share a collective responsibility with your peers within the squad for the end-to-end lifecycle management of the service or product you are delivering. You are consistently contributing and delivering against the squad priorities and roadmaps.
Accountabilities
Cloud Cost Monitoring : Continuously track cloud usage and expenses across different cloud providers (AWS, Azure, GCP) to identify potential cost inefficiencies and areas for optimization.
Cost Optimization Strategies : Develop and implement strategies to reduce cloud costs, such as rightsizing instances, utilizing reserved instances, optimizing auto-scaling policies, and identifying underutilized resources.
Cost Allocation and Chargeback : Create and maintain chargeback/showback models to accurately allocate cloud costs to different business units or teams, fostering accountability for cloud usage.
Budgeting and Forecasting : Collaborate with finance teams to develop cloud budgets, forecast future spending, and track against planned expenditures.
Data Analysis and Reporting : Analyze cloud usage data to identify trends, generate insightful reports for stakeholders, and present actionable insights to optimize cloud spend.
Automation and Tooling : Leverage cloud management tools and automation scripts to streamline cost optimization tasks, including setting up alerts for excessive cloud usage.
Collaboration with Teams : Work closely with engineering and operations teams to educate them on cost-effective cloud practices, provide feedback on new projects, identify opportunities to refine steady-state practices for waste elimination, and ensure alignment with cloud cost optimization goals. Experience / Previous jobs required for the job
Bachelor s degree in a computer-related field (such as Computer Science, Engineering), and at least 10 years of IT experience.
