Position Title: Irrigation Engineer
Location: Morogoro, Tanzania
Reports To: Director - Agriculture
Role Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Irrigation Engineer to join our team for a large-scale sugarcane plantation project. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with centre pivot, sprinkler, and drip irrigation systems, and be capable of managing all aspects of irrigation design, implementation, and operations. The candidate must also demonstrate expertise in irrigation scheduling and resource optimization.
Key Responsibilities:
1.Irrigation System Planning and Coordination:
- Prepare detailed irrigation proposals tailored to project needs and budget constraints.
- Collaborate with various irrigation companies for system design, procurement, and installation.
- Conduct site surveys to develop comprehensive irrigation plans, including layout, equipment selection, and installation strategies.
2.Installation and Execution:
- Monitor the installation of irrigation systems, ensuring adherence to design specifications and timelines.
- Organize and allocate resources effectively for seamless irrigation installation.
- Prepare and manage project budgets, ensuring cost-effective procurement and utilization of materials.
- Oversee daily execution of irrigation installation, troubleshooting issues as they arise.
- Plan and manage manpower, including recruitment, training, and supervision of field staff.
- Ensure all work is performed in compliance with local regulations and environmental standards.
3.System Maintenance and Optimization:
- Perform routine inspections and maintenance of irrigation systems to maintain optimal performance.
- Troubleshoot technical issues, providing quick and effective solutions.
- Train field personnel on system operation, maintenance, and repair protocols.
4.Water Management and Irrigation Scheduling:
- Develop and implement precise irrigation schedules based on crop water requirements, soil properties, and climatic data.
- Monitor system efficiency and adjust scheduling to optimize water use and enhance sugarcane yield.
- Use advanced technologies, such as sensors and automation, to support data-driven irrigation management.
5.Reporting and Documentation:
- Maintain records of irrigation operations, including water usage, system performance, and maintenance activities.
- Generate reports on project progress, budget utilization, and system efficiency for management review.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Education: Bachelors degree in Agricultural Engineering, Irrigation Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: At least 5 years of experience in designing, installing, and managing centre pivot, sprinkler, and drip irrigation systems in large scale plantation.
- Skills:
- Proficiency in irrigation scheduling and water resource management.
- Strong knowledge of hydraulic systems, soil-water-plant relationships, and sustainable farming practices.
- Experience in managing project budgets, resource allocation, and team supervision.
- Familiarity with RTK systems, sensors, and precision irrigation technologies.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Languages: Proficiency in English is preferred.
