Job Description

A computational biologist develops analyzes data to get useful results and models. This includes a knowledge of the data itself, understanding where it comes from and how it is to be used. It also includes a deep knowledge of available computer software and processes, since the computational biologist needs to select the correct tool for the data that uses algorithms and equations that are appropriate. Here are the steps a computational biologist takes to work with a certain data set:

Designs data analysis plan, deciding what algorithms and software are best suited to the project
Researches similar approaches used by others
Creates the programs to use and analyzes the data
Implements testing to make sure that the data is being processed accurately, like using a control group in a scientific study
Create data models to interpret the data so that others can understand it and use it in further study
Communicates results to others and compares similar data
