Job Description
Roustabouts are manual laborers who work in the oil and gas drilling industries. They are responsible for a wide variety of tasks aimed at keeping oil and gas rigs running safely and efficiently. Roustabouts typically work difficult shifts that be more than twelve hours long, so they need to be physically fit and have the stamina for hours of manual labor.
Becoming a roustabout is typically the entry point for workers in the gas and oil industry. While this role has not traditionally required any formal education, the increased demand for roustabouts (particularly in natural gas drilling operations) has resulted in vocational schools and community colleges establishing programs to prepare candidates for employment as roustabouts.
Job Duties and Tasks for: "Roustabouts, Oil and Gas"
1) Clean up spilled oil by bailing it into barrels.
2) Unscrew or tighten pipes, casing, tubing, and pump rods, using hand and power wrenches and tongs.
3) Bolt together pump and engine parts.
4) Walk flow lines to locate leaks, using electronic detectors and making visual inspections.
5) Move pipes to and from trucks, using truck winches and motorized lifts, or by hand.
6) Dismantle and repair oil field machinery, boilers, and steam engine parts, using hand tools and power tools.
7) Dig drainage ditches around wells and storage tanks.
8) Keep pipe deck and main deck areas clean and tidy.
9) Guide cranes to move loads about decks.
10) Supply equipment to rig floors as requested, and provide assistance to roughnecks.
11) Dig holes, set forms, and mix and pour concrete into forms in order to make foundations for wood or steel derricks.
