Role Summary
WSPs Smart Consulting team provide solutions for our clients, who are mainly UK-based, that vary from bespoke developments to system integrations to deployment of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) products. Though actively expanding into other areas, our in-house development team specialises in Geographic Information System (GIS) solutions, and bespoke developments.
The candidate will be a part of an extended software development team; will help to build and lead a small local team; and will take part in maintaining and developing solutions built in Python, often using the Django framework. He / She will be responsible for the design and ongoing development of major and minor Web applications and services for internal and external clients. The developer will maintain, design, test and deliver a variety of Web applications solutions and services for clients who are mostly based in the UK and Europe.
The candidate will be expected to complete an online Tech Test of his/her programming approach as part of the interview process. As part of the extended software development team, we will expect the successful candidate to begin by visiting the UK (Manchester) for at least one month in order to receive training in our current software; technology stack; and ways of working.
Responsibilities
Write Python code for new and existing Web applications
Understand business objectives and translate into software design / functionality / requirements for bespoke solutions and integrations
Stakeholder presentations, chairing meetings, workshop facilitation, business and technical document writing
Working with a wide range of client facing stakeholders, including the broader Smart Consulting team, with some engagement at the senior level
Ensure software governance practices - maintain a high level of coding standards throughout, which will be coordinated and agreed upon across the whole development team
Use Smart Consulting Technology stack (see details, below)
Implementation of end to end Solution Lifecycle Development process, ensuring all products are built to an appropriate level of quality for the stage (alpha/beta/production)
Manage platform hosting models and environments using Smart Consultings DevOps practices
Manage, build and mentor offshore delivery team, ensuring motivation, collaboration, communication and focus; ensure alignment with and integration into standard Smart Consulting agile working, development and operations practices
Manage project delivery, project scope & changes and customer expectations, using appropriate agile project management practices to keep to deadlines, learning & iterating frequently, acting as a Scrum Master of a small team
Troubleshoot, investigate and resolve technical issues; ensure a high level of testing, using relevant testing approaches, according to the principles and practices laid down across the whole testing team
React quickly and effectively to issues and opportunities.
Key Competencies / Skills

6 or more years of experience in commercial application development with Python
2 or more years of commercial experience with Django
Proficient with a commercial development framework such as React, using a range of technologies (Python, Rest API and SQL)
Proficient with client scripting technologies (jQuery, Javascript, AJAX)
Proven ability to lead a team to deliver software projects and significant experience of taking responsibility for doing so
An adaptable, problem-solving approach coupled with a good understanding of Agile development and design principles
Able to measure and evaluate outcomes, individually and with the team
Understanding and experience of major software design patterns
Programming in a team environment utilizing software development life cycle (SDLC) tools such as GIT and JIRA
Involved in the development of public facing web applications.
Development experience with a relational database preferably PostgreSQL and in the configuration and administration of SQL databases (including queries, stored procedures, functions, triggers, tables, views and indexes)
Experience with JavaScript/jQuery, CSS, and HTML layouts, and the ability to write functional cross browser code; good understanding of responsive design frameworks and techniques
Good understanding of Application lifecycle management, release management and following industry coding best practices
Good communication and interpersonal skills - proven ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a broad range of technical and business stakeholders, including setting expectations; to do so proactively as well as reactively; and to listen and understand
Ability to work independently in a self-directed manner and collaboratively as a team member in the accomplishment of goals. [Desired skills]
Experience in DevOps using Docker and full stack web development, as well as some experience of Linux Admin.
An awareness of GIS solutions
Experience of managing - even better, recruiting and building - a cross-disciplinary software development team
Qualifications
Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or Engineering or equivalent work experience.6-8 years of relevant experience in Web App development
Must possess valid Passport
