  • Coverage: Delivering low-cost high-impact nutrition interventions, especially for women, adolescent girls, and children in Africa and Asia;
  • Leverage: Integrating nutrition across sectors to maximize impact and ensure there are no missed opportunities; and,
  • Influence: Utilizing research, technical assistance, advocacy, and partnerships with national and global nutrition actors to improve policies, programs, and resources for nutrition.


Reason for the hire:
Nutrition International is looking to hire an Economist, Asia. This position will provide expert analysis, guidance, and oversight on aspects of NI programs that relate to markets, commodity supply chains, and economic evaluation. The position will focus primarily on NIs Social Safety Net Programs and Large-Scale Food Fortification Programs but may also provide targeted support to other program areas as needed. The position will involve designing and implementing market and economic research as well as implementing modeling tools and analyses developed by NIs Health Economics team.Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Market and supply chain analysis
  • Carry out targeted market and supply chain analysis that will inform both the design and implementation of NI programs; with likely research questions including industry structure, value chain analysis for key sectors, value distribution and capture across the supply chain, market barriers analysis, and business model analysis
  • Carry out policy and regulatory analysis of select markets or market sub-sectors and support the determination of implications for program design or implementation
  • Carry out targeted customer / consumer research that will inform both the design and implementation of NI programs; with likely research questions including buying processes for key commodities, market segmentation, and consumer preference analysis
  • Ensure that the market and supply chain analysis conducted addresses and is aligned with NI's programmatic goals
  • Economic evaluation
  • Support program teams in costing program designs (both NI programs and programs being recommended by NI to other parties such as government)
  • Carry out cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis for programs and interventions, including by using modelling methodologies and tools developed by the Health Economics team
  • Carry out financial modelling for key business models or firms, including cash-flow analysis, return-on-investment, internal rates of return
  • Program design and implementation
  • Provide input into the design and implementation of programs from a market and economic perspective
  • Lead on designing specific market-related elements of the program, such as for example, incentive schemes to encourage investment by firms into fortifying foods
  • Liaise with key market players as needed, providing strategic advice and guidance to address business model challenges or market-barriers to achieving program goals
  • Support and provide input to program monitoring, learning, and evaluation, especially on market-related aspects of the program
  • Knowledge translation
  • Develop briefs, reports and manuscripts on the public health analysis conducted within programs.
  • Support the translation of public health/nutrition aspects of programs into broader program briefs, advocacy materials, presentations, and knowledge products.
  • Support the project team in the communication of public health/nutrition concepts and findings with governments, donors and team and analysis findings.
  • Contract management
  • Prepare terms of reference and lead on the selection of agencies to conduct specific pieces of public health analyses.
  • Manage the work of any assigned sub-contractors including budget development and reconciliation and quality control.


Must Haves:

  • A Master's degree in economics (development or business economics strongly preferred, agricultural economics or health economics also an asset).
  • A minimum of 7 years' experience carrying out market and supply chain analyses and economic research.
  • Experience carrying out mathematical analyses and modeling of social health science data sets and validating these in the real world.


Preferable:

  • Experience working in the development sector and/or in public health strongly preferred
  • Experience with consumer / customer analysis strongly preferred
  • Experience working with SMEs strongly preferred
  • Experience working at international / regional level (beyond India) considered an asset.
  • Experience with the use of market systems approaches such as M4P and MSI strongly preferred.


Communication Skills:

  • Fluency in English - written and spoken
  • Fluency in Hindi - spoken (preferred)


Other Specific Skill Requirements:

  • Demonstrated success in technical writing and able to produce clear, written briefs
  • Able to manage sub-contractors budgets, time, and quality of work
  • Able to translate economic evidence and data into program implications and actions
  • Able to design, implement, and quality assure market and economic research and analysis


Travel Requirements:

  • This position will be based in New Delhi, India
  • The position may require travel to other NI countries in Asia or NIs HQ in Ottawa Canada
