Registered as a public charitable trust in 2006, Americares India is a health-focused relief and development organization that responds to people affected by poverty or disaster with life-changing health programs, medicine, and medical supplies.
When disaster, poverty, disease, or policy causes health crises, we deliver medicines, medical supplies and humanitarian aid to a trusted network of NGOs, hospitals and health care providers across India serving vulnerable populations. We also create and support programs that increase health worker capacity, improve clinical quality, and provide more access to health care for underprivileged populations across India.

Our core programs include Emergency Programs, Access to Medicine, Community Health, and Clinical Services. Americares India Strategic Path FY18-FY 27
In 2016, Americares India completed our first 10 years of operations in India helping people live longer and healthier lives. In our second decade, we aim to strengthen our position as a health-focused relief and development organization that responds to people affected by poverty or disaster with life-saving health programs, medicine, and medical aid.
OUR STRATEGY:
Helping urban health centres thrive (micro)
Building health-conscious communities:
Health outcomes of the urban poor living in crowded slums is compromised due to lack of awareness, access, and cultural misconceptions. Lack of access to safe drinking water and poor hygiene practices lead to communicable disease (CD) burden while urban lifestyle is leading to the rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCD), doubling the disease burden.
Americares works with the communities to address issues around awareness, access, and misconceptions through preventive, promotive, and curative care. Our urban Mobile Health Centre (MHC) program provides access to quality primary care(A), Behaviour change communication (B), Capacity building of local healthcare providers (C), and Development of referral linkages (D).
The urban School Health Program (SHP) within municipal schools is modeled to encourage healthy behaviors and promote disease prevention among children from urban slums. The program aims to nurture school children as the health ambassadors of the community.
Our health facilitators partner with the community health volunteers (Arogya Mitra) to raise consciousness around safe drinking Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH).
Catalyzing efficient health system:
The health of the urban poor is at risk due to an inefficient health system comprising of suboptimal local health centres, underperforming private health care providers (HCPs), and underutilized community ecosystem.
Americares improves efficiencies at the centre, of the HCPs, and with the community ecosystem.
We work with local health centres to build capacity and resilience of the health centre itself, based on the World Health Organization (WHO) building blocks of strong health systems.
We facilitate a sense of warmth, respect, compassion, and dignity patients experience from a caring health centre team.
We work with the local non-allopathic HCPs within urban slums to build their clinical capacity and improve the quality of care, through structured training and development programs.
We strengthen the bonding between the community and various local stakeholders including social health activists, charity organizations, and ancillary providers.
The Connection:
We ensure bidirectional engagement between the health centre and community and that with the larger health system for referral and support.
